All it took was a kind word from one world-famous tenor recommending another, not yet an up and coming one, and certainly not famous, tenor. After all, they were both Italians. It was 1992 and Luciano Pavarotti said, thanks, but no thanks, it's not me Andrea Bocelli is the right singer for that task. The rest, as they say, is history.
