About Cincinnati Bengals
The Cincinnati Bengals play American football and are based in Cincinnati, Ohio. They are currently members of the North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) of the National Football League (NFL). Their home stadium is Paul Brown Stadium in downtown Cincinnati, named after their legendary former owner.
Brown named the team the Bengals in order "to give it a link with past professional football in Cincinnati." Another Bengals team existed in the city and played in a previous American Football League from 1937 to 1942. He added black as the secondary color. Brown chose a very simple logo: the word "BENGALS" in black lettering.
The Bengals won the AFC championship in 1981 and 1988, but lost Super Bowls XVI and XXIII to the San Francisco 49ers. The 1990s and the 2000s were a period of great struggle. Following the 1990 season, the team went fifteen years without posting a winning record nor making the playoffs.
Since the mid-2000s, the team's fortunes have improved. Two years after becoming head coach, Marvin Lewis guided the Bengals to their first winning season and first division title in over a decade. After the acquisition of Andy Dalton as quarterback in 2011, the Bengals have made the playoffs each season, ranking highly among NFL teams in win totals. The Bengals drafts are also highly touted, leading to a consistency that had long escaped the franchise. However, the team has remained unable to win in the postseason and have not won a playoff game since 1990. The Bengals are as of 2015 one of the 13 NFL teams not to have a Super Bowl victory to their credit.
Some star players over the years include Anthony Munoz started 183 of 185 games for Cincinnati between 1980 and 1992. His 185 games played ranks him fifth in Bengals history. He anchored an offensive line that made it to the Super Bowl in 1988 and performed well enough to make 11 consecutive Pro Bowls from 1981-91.
No one has played as long for the Bengals as quarterback Ken Anderson who can boast 16 years service. He remains the franchise leader in passing yards with 32,838 as well as holding the record for his 197 touchdown passes.
Another quarterback Boomer Esiason led the most successful stretch of Bengals football history. The Bengals followed Boomer's arm to Super Bowl XXIII following the 1988 season in which he won NFL MVP honors. Boomer played in 134 games in Cincinnati, starting 123 of them and has achieved 27,149 passing yards, second in Bengals history.
Former Bengals receiver Isaac Curtis was a member of the Bengals.com Hall of Fame inaugural class. Behind his 7,101 receiving yards on 416 catches, Curtis finished his career as the Bengals best-ever receiver. His record of most receiving yards stood for years and remains second all-time in Bengals history.
