People often speak with great admiration about Real Madrid and its achievements in European competitions. Emperors of Europe, people call them. Independiente, as the club is known for short, has won the Copa Liabertadores four straight times in the 7o's. The club was the first Argentinian team to win the competition in 1964. Up to date, the club has reached the Copa Libertadores final seven times, and won them all, last time in 1984. In addition, the club has also won 2 Intercontinental Cups and 2 Copa Sudamericana Cups. Indeed, their nickname (one of them, at least) - Rey de Copas (kings of cups) - suits tem perfectly.
And not only on the international level. Independiente is one of the biggest football clubs in Argentina, behind only Boca Juniors and River Plate, with a total of 16 Primera Division titles and 9 national cups. Its list of renowned, international players is long, included world cup winners.
Independiente resides in the port city of Avellaneda in the greater Buenos Aires area, to which it moved in 1907, two years after its establishment. A year later, the tem began wearing red uniforms, thus giving birth to more nicknames: El Rojo (The Red) and Los Diablos Rojos.
Every football fan around the world probably remember the scream: "Aguerrroooo" when Kun scored in extra time to give Manchester City its first Premier League title in the final match of the 2011-12 season. The boy Sergio joined Independiente's youth academy at an early age, and played for the first team for three season, scoring 23 goals, before breaking the club's fee record when he joined Atletico Madrid.
Other notable Independiente players include Jorge Burruchaga, who scored 53 goals in 146 matches between 1981-1985, a member of Argentina's 1986 World Cup winners Daniel Bertoni, who made 179 appearances and scored 80 goals for Independiente between 1973-1977, scoring a goal in Argentina's final win over the Netherlands in 1978 And Ricardo Bochini, an Independiente legend, considered to be one of the finest playmakers in Argentina's history. Bochini, who played his whole career for Independiente, 634 matches all together between 1971-1992, was Diego Armando Maradona's ideal and formed a deadly forward combination with Bertoni.
Independiente play its home matches in 42,069-seat Estadio Libertadores de America. Costs of the new stadium, opened to play in 2009, partially came from the sale of Aguero and other players.
