About Club Brugge
Maybe we ought to start with Club Brugge finest hour: The 1977-78 European Champion Clubs Cup Final (now days known as the Champions League): Club Brugge Vs. Liverpool at the old Wembley Stadium. In addition, Brugge won 5 Belgium championships in that decade, 3 of them in a row.
Club Brugge was (formally Club Brugge KV) was founded in 1891 by the name of Brugsche Football Club. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the club was recreated, switched names and went through some meggers. It won it’s first league championship in 1919-20 and it had to wait until 1972-73 season for the second one to follow.
In 1975, Brugge moved to play in Olympiastadion, since then renamed Jan Breydel Stadium, a 29,062-seat venue, where it still plays.
A milestone was set in 1992, when Daniel Amokachi scored the first ever goal in the newly created Champions League. The Nigerian striker, nicknamed “The Bull”, scored the only goal during Brugge’s opening group match win against CSKA Moscow.
The club’s city rival is Cercle Brugge, with whom they share their home stadium and contest the Bruges derby against. Club Brugge’s biggest ever derby win was their 10-0 victory in 1990. Club Brugge have won 95 of the 161 contested derbies.
Notable former players include Dutch attacker Rob Rensenbrink, who scored 24 goals in 55 appearances between 1969-1971 Franky Van der Elst, who played for Brugge 455 times between 1984-1999 Gert Verheyen, who scored 155 goals in 415 appearances between 1992-2006 and Dutch striker Ruud Geels, who scored 28 goals in only 53 matches between 1972-1974.
Brugge, with its famous black and blue stripes, have won 14 Belgian league titles as well as 11 Belgian cups and 13 Belgian Super Cups.
Club Brugge have two retired squad numbers, 12, in honor of the supporters (the 12th man) and 23 in honor of striker François Sterchele, who scored 11 goals in just 31 matches for the club before he died tragically in a car accident in 2008.
