About Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche are a professional ice hockey team based in Denver, Colorado, playing as members of the Central Division of the Western Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Avalanche are the only team in their division not based in the Central Time Zone the team is situated in the Mountain Time Zone. Their home arena is the Pepsi Center.
The Avalanche were founded in 1972 as the Quebec Nordiques and were one of the charter franchises of the World Hockey Association. The franchise joined the NHL in 1979 as a result of the NHL–WHA merger. Following the 1994–95 season, they were sold to the COMSAT Entertainment Group and relocated to Denver. In the club's first season in Denver, the Avalanche won the Pacific Division and went on to sweep aside the Florida Panthers in the 1996 Stanley Cup Finals, becoming the first NHL team to win the Stanley Cup in the season following a relocation. . This was the first major professional sports championship a Denver-based team would bring to the city. In the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals, the Avalanche defeated the New Jersey Devils 4–3 to win their second and most recent championship. As a result, they are the only active NHL team that has won all of its Stanley Cup Final appearances. Coincidentally, the Devils had preceded the Avalanche in Denver they were called the Colorado Rockies.
The Avalanche have won nine division titles (including their first eight in a row in Denver, the longest such streak in NHL history) and qualified for the playoffs in each of their first ten seasons in Denver this winning streak came to an end in 2007.
One of the records that the Avalanche hold is the all-time NHL record for the longest consecutive attendance sell outs at home games with 487. The streak began on November 9, 1995 and lasted until October 16, 2006, after a reported attendance of 17,681, which is 326 under the capacity at Pepsi Center, before a game against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Avalanche recorded their 500th home sell out in their 515th game in Denver on January 20, 2007, against the Detroit Red Wings.
Some star players have been on the ice for the Avalanche especially in their years of greatest success the late 1990s and early 2000s. Joe Sakic wore the captain's "C" for 13 years in Denver. He is one of the few players to play his entire career with one franchise, being drafted by Quebec 15th overall in 1987 and moving to Colorado when the Nordiques became the Avalanche. He led the team to two Stanley Cups in 10 playoff appearances and eight division championships.
Patrick Roy who played from 1995 – 2003 was one of the great goaltenders of all times and provided a quality that the Avalanche have not been able to reproduce since his retirement.
