Rayo Vallecano is the team of the people, the team of the neighborhood, the barrio, if you will. The people are from the small Madrid neighborhood of Vallecas, a proud working-class section of the capitol, and they never forget it. Nor do fans let players and management alike forget it for a single second.
A background check needs to be done in order to understand the role that Rayo Vallecano play in the lives of the community it lives and plays in. After all, we are talking about Madrid, Spain, breading home of the Franco fascist regime, that still hunts part of the country until even today. Then there is the football, where the two major clubs, the richer, well established Real Madrid is known as the “King’s Team”, and the city’s other team, Atletico Madrid, used to be a working-class team, but has since gone to become too big and too rich to be classified as one. Which leaves us with Rayo Vallecano.

Other than that, an incident in 2016 tell the whole story: The club signed Ukrainian player Roman Zozulya on loan from Real Betis. The player lasted all of one training session before his contract was canceled and he was sent back, because of believes he had right-wing connections and has made remarks in accordance in the past. That’s because in Vallecas, social ideas and a way of life is as important as football life. As the club slogan goes: “poor, but proud”.
Rayo Vallecano - or Rayo Vallecano de Madrid as its full name - was established in 1924. The club’s uniform – white with a red diagonal stripe, was inspired by Argentina’s River Plate. The club first reached Spain’s Segunda Division in 1956-57 and was promoted for the first time to La Liga in 1977-78. It has jumped between the two leagues ever since, other than a 4-year span in the 2000’s, where it was relegated the 3rd division.
Prior to that, during the 2000-01 season, Rayo Vallecano reached European competition and played in the UEFA Cup, where it reached the quarter finals, where it lost 2-4 in two matches to Alaves.
Along the years, some notable players have worn Rayo Vallecano’s uniform. Among them: Mexican striker Hugo Sanchez made 29 appearances, scoring 16 goals in 1993-94 Brazilian Diego Costa spent a season on loan (2012) scoring 10 goals in 16 appearances Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui played for Vallecano between 1997-2002, making 112 appearances Michu spent two season at the club (2011-2012) and scored 15 times during 37 appearances And Alvaro Negredo camed through the youth ranks and made 12 appearances in 2004-2005.
And as of 2018-19, the club from the neighborhood is back to La Liga.
