About Slavia Prague
Some big names of Czech football wore the white and red of Slavia Pague along the years. Some of the names, accompanied by their pictures, adorn the outside walls of Sparta's home field, Fortuna Arena, for all to see and remember the glorious past.
Together with their in-city rivals, Sparta Prague, Slavia in one of the two biggest football clubs in Czech Republic, its history dating back over 100 years ago, through almost 50 years of the communist regime, by the time the country was known as Czechoslovakia.
The club, Sportovní klub Slavia Praha (as natives called their capital), was formed in 1892 by students, as part of a sports club, as football was just one of many sports activities operated under the club. Even today, in Slavia's complex in the city of Prague, there are track and field stadium, a basketball arena and other fields dedicated to numerous sports activities.
Ever since its inception, Slavia has operated under several different names, starting with SK ACOS Praha. The name Slavia appeared one year later, later on to be dropped, until it became the club's official name in 1991, after the Czech Republic and Slovakia has decided to break up Czechoslovakia and go their different ways.
Up to date, Slavia has won 7 Czech First League titles, the last one in 2020-21. The number needs to be added to 13 Czechoslovakia league titles, and 7 Czech Cups.
Among it's notable players, some of the came from Czech's golden area of the mid 90's and include midfielder Vladimir Smicer, who' among others played six years for Liverpool and came back to conclude his career in Slavia in 2007 Midfielder Karel Poborsky went on the play for Manchester United, Benfica and Lazio, but upon returning, played for Sparta Prague Another midfielder, Patrik Berger, played for Borussia Dortmund, played with Smicer in Liverpool, and also played for Portsmouth and Aston Villa. Like Poborsky, upon returning to the Czech Republic, he also played for Sparta Prague And defender Tomas Soucek, who have already made over 140 appearances for West Ham United, where he carries the captain's armband.
Slavia all-time appearance leader is Milan Skoda, who have made 214 appearances between 2012-2020. He is also the club's all-time goal-scorer with 77 goals.
Slavia Prague play its home matches in 20,800-seat Fortuna Arena.
