No, no, no, says Sir Geoff Hurst, Banks’ teammate in England’s 1966 FIFA World Cup winner, the greatest ever save by a goalkeeper was Banks’ save of my penalty in the 1971-72 League Cup semi-finals.
Stoke went out and beat Hurst’s West Ham United in the second match of the semis and won the cup after beating Chelsea, to this day the last cup the team had won, even though it had won twice the Football League Trophy in the 90’s. Banks is regarded as Stoke City and England’s greatest ever goalkeeper. Hurst is regarded as one of the greatest forwards England has ever known.
Stoke City was formed in 1863 by school students in the city of Stoke-on-Trent in central England. In 1878, the club merged with a cricket club and it took 22 years after establishment that the club became professional. It became Stoke City Football Club only in 1925, after Stoke-on-Trent was granted city status.
Stoke came close to winning the 1st division in 1946-47, needing to win in the last match of the season, but the club was unable to win against Sheffield United.
In 1997-98 Stoke left Victoria Ground, its home since 1878 and moved into the modern Britannia Stadium. The move has not proved successful in the shorts hull, as Stoke was relegated to the 3rd tier. In time for the 2008-09 season, Stoke made it back to the Premier League under the rains of manager Tony Pulis. Although many have made the club to be on its way back to the championship by the end of the season, Stoke not only survived, but it made it for the FA Cup final at season’s end, where it lost to Manchester City. That in itself qualified the team for the UEFA Europa League the following season. The club made it past the group stage but lost to Spain’s Valencia. Tough years lay ahead. As Stoke batteled relegation for som seasons. It finally happened at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season. Despite having landed some respectable English and international players such as goalkeeper Jack Butland, team captain Ryan Shawcross, Saido Berahino, Joe Allen, Darren Fletcher, Xherdan Shaqiri and Bojan Krkić. Stoke was unable to keep its place in the Premier League.
After playing for West Ham for 13 years, Geoff Hurst moved to Stoke, where he scored 30 goals between 1972-1975.
Gordon Banks, of course, is the all-time great goalkeeper, making 250 appearances for Stoke City between 1967-1973. He was replaced in goal by the great Peter Shilton, who made 121 appearances between 1974-1977.
Eric Skeels is Stoke’s appearance leader with 597 matches between 1960-1976. The club’s top goal scorer is John Ritchie, who scored 176 times between 1962-66 and 1969-74.
